Abdülaziz Bayındır (born 1951) is a former Mufti of Istanbul who currently heads an Islamic foundation. Bayındır served as a faculty member at the Istanbul University since 1997.
According to Bayındır the prayer time calculation method used since the Ottomans are erroneous. He believes that prayer times can be calculated at Polar Zones (rather than using Mekkah-time) in line with his interpretation of the Quran. He claims Muslims in Turkey fast 70 minutes more than necessary because of this error. He worked with Adnan Ökten, Istanbul University Department of Astronomy Sciences professor, in this project.
